Guided walking holiday

Walking

England • The Isles of Scilly • Tresco and Bryher

Hell Bay Storm Idylls and islands Varied terrains and vistas of 100 isles. We visit several ancient sites and experience the Isles of Scilly's sub-tropical vegetation and many species of seabird, all bathed in the exceptionally clear, pure island light.
Some of our days

Arrival day
An opportunity to explore the beach and rocks beside the Hotel.

Tresco and the Abbey Gardens
Tresco is an island of contrasts with cliffs and heathland to the north and open grassy areas and sand dunes along the south. The day includes visits to King Charles' and Cromwell's Castles, Abbey Pool, where a variety of birdlife can be expected, and the world-famous Abbey Gardens.

The silence of St Martin's
Taking the boat to St Martin's with its patchwork of hedged fields and its spectacular empty beaches. We may see seals below us in the little bays as we walk up to Chapel Down from where the mainland is often visible.

Bryher and Samson
Bryher is separated from Tresco by a mere half mile of sheltered water but its west coast is exposed to the full force of the Atlantic. After a morning exploring, we take the boat for a beach landing on the tiny island of Samson, abandoned in 1855, where the ruined cottages can still be seen.

Walkers in Scilly Isles

St Agnes and Gugh
St Agnes is the most separate of the inhabited islands with a deep channel dividing it from the others. We follow the coast with spectacular views of the Western Rocks, the scene of so many shipwrecks, and the Bishop Rock lighthouse. At low tide we cross the sandbar to Gugh and explore its wealth of prehistoric sites.

A capital day on St Mary's
We take the boat to St Mary's, where three-quarters of Scilly's 2,000 strong population live. On St Mary's, the largest of the islands, we visit Old Town, the main mediaeval settlement, and head north along the coastal path.

Departure day
Leave at your leisure after breakfast.
