Guided walking holiday

Walking

Italy • Abruzzo • Barrea

Bear in Abruzzo Walking with wolves High in the Apennines and home to brown bear, lynx, chamois and wolf lies the Abruzzo National Park, the oldest in Italy. Here we walk among the huge beech forests, mountain passes and lakeside villages in what is the secret heart of the country.
Some of our days

Arrival Day
Leaving Rome we arrive in Barrea in time for a short walk to get to know the local area before dinner.

Monte San Nicola,Valle Fondillo
Starting at the Pass of Forca d'Acero, we begin what is one of the best walks in the park.

Villetta Barrea and beyond
Today we will walk through one of the most beautiful forests of the park. Spectacular views of the high peaks of the Camosciara massif are the backdrop to this route where with luck, we will follow tracks and signs of the presence of brown bear and wolf!

Walkers in Abruzzo

Lago Vivo (Living Lake)
Today we walk to the 'Living Lake', so called because it appears and vanishes with the seasons. Wonderful views, high peaks and home to the primary populations of lynx, bear and wolf.

Free day
A chance to visit Sulmona, the birthplace of the great poet Ovid, and the lakeside village of Scanno with its intricate network of streets, mansions and unexpected small squares. Alternatively hire a bike or canoe and explore the lake of Barrea.

Abruzzo woodland

Walnuts and mountain springs
A wonderful varied walk that takes us to some of the most attractive areas and one of the finest hikes of the Park. In the evening there is a picnic, where Carmelo, our host, cooks many local specialities and a local shepherd makes ricotta with sheep's milk for our dinner!

Monte Tranquillo
We take a short trip to Pescasseroli before we begin our ascent to the mountain also known as 'Tre Confini', three borders, because it is the natural border between three different valleys. From the top it is possible to see the entire north side of the Park. Monte Tranquillo is one of the best places to observe wild animals.

Departure day
We depart for Rome airport after an early breakfast.
