Gorges and grapes Picasso and Miró painted here, drawn by the land and the light. Cliffs and gorges create dramatic backdrops of pink and ochre and terraced vineyards are set against deep blue skies across which golden eagles glide.

Arrival day
We arrive at our hotel in Prades in time to explore this walled village.

Ancient stones and deep valleys
A commanding 360 degree panorama from a quiet stone hamlet gives a sense of the magnificent countryside.

La Mussara
This abandoned hilltop village with its impressive ruined church, woodland and fine panoramic vistas, stands at almost 1000m. On a clear day you might even glimpse Mallorca.

Red sandstone and dappled light
We sketch and paint in the village, with its quaint and unusual red sandstone buildings after which we follow a wooded track with dappled light, wild flowers and sculptural trees.

Free day
An untutored day with a chance to visit the coastal Roman town of Tarragona.

Farena
Overlooking poplars, cypress trees and steep limestone cliffs this delightfully unspoilt, hilltop village rises above a river where we listen for nightingales.

Ermita de Barrulles
A very pretty hermitage nestling on the edge of verdant woodland.

Departure day
Leaving Prades we arrive at Barcelona airport by 10.00.
