Painting

France • Provence • Les Alpilles

Fields of lavender in Provence Lingering in Les Alpilles A week of dazzling light, cypresses, olive groves and vineyards interspersed with shade-dappled Provençal villages. All set against the shimmering backdrop of the mountains of Les Alpilles.
Some of our days

Arrival day
We arrive in Maussane-les-Alpilles in time to settle in and explore this shade-dappled Provençal town.

Castles in the air
A day in the wild landscape beneath the medieval citadel of Les Baux, looking up to the ruins across olive groves and vineyards.

Views from the ramparts
A day spent in a nearby fortified hilltop village that offers far reaching views of the Alpilles as well as an array of intimate village scenes.

Doorway in Provence

In the footsteps of Van Gogh
After an optional trip to the bustling market of Saint-Remy-de-Provence, we visit the monastery of Saint-Paul-de- Mausole with its Romanesque church and cloister. This is where Van Gogh sought refuge at the end of his life and where he created many of his most famous works. We paint in or around the monastery, with time to pause at some of the best preserved Roman relics in France on our way back.

Free day
An optional trip to Arles, with its lively café-filled squares, art galleries, tiny shady streets, fine Renaissance buildings and well preserved Roman remains.

Chateaux and chapelles
Plenty of locations to choose in and around the elegant grounds of a nearby chateau just minutes from our hotel. After our day's painting we will sample the wine and delicious food produced on the estate.

A last look at Les Alpilles
A final day spent in the heart of Les Alpilles – this tiny, scorched white mountain range rising up from the surrounding plain 'like a frozen wave' in the words of a 19th century traveller.

Departure day
We leave after an early breakfast to arrive at Marseille airport by 10.00.

Note: This is a selection of the many options available. Weather conditions, group interests and the individual tutor will influence the final itinerary.
